Help shape the Human Futures Lab.

One Planet, Many Contexts: what could happen if learners around the world explored local sustainability challenges, used AI without surrendering human judgement, and learned across different realities?

This is a promising direction, not a finished programme. We are inviting students, educators, researchers, organisations and communities to question it, enrich it and help turn it into something meaningful and possible.

How we arrived here

From conversation to a project the world can help shape

An international group explored the human capacities education should develop, the evolving role of educators and the possibilities and tensions created by AI. Their discussion, project preferences and contextual research became an initial direction: a globally connected lab grounded in real local challenges.

The working idea

One planet. Many contexts. A shared inquiry into human futures.

The Human Futures Lab begins with a possibility: learners and educators in different places might investigate a sustainability challenge that matters locally, use AI critically and transparently, take a realistic form of action, and let dialogue with other contexts change their thinking.

Begin with local reality

Teams might observe, listen, measure and identify a challenge connected with water, food, energy, transport, biodiversity, waste, climate resilience or another local priority.

AI

Interrogate the technology

AI might become one source among several—something learners question, verify and compare with evidence, expertise and community knowledge.

Act, reflect and connect

Teams might test a modest response, study what happens and exchange learning with partners whose realities reveal different assumptions.

These are possibilities, not fixed components. The purpose of opening the project is to discover what should remain, what should change and what has not yet been imagined.

Questions we hope collaborators will help answer

The project needs a diversity of voices before its inquiry process, participation model, shared outputs or possible pilot can be defined.

Which human capacities should the Lab make visible—and how might they differ across cultures?
What kinds of local sustainability challenges would be authentic, feasible and safe?
How should students use AI in ways that strengthen rather than bypass thinking?
Which ages, subjects, settings and communities could participate meaningfully?
How could teams learn across contexts without ranking communities or exporting solutions unchanged?
What forms of evidence could show judgement, adaptation, action and honest learning?
How can participation remain possible with limited connectivity, devices or access to paid AI platforms?
What safeguards, partnerships and educator support would responsible participation require?
